Single Donor Hair: Why One Head Matters
Single donor is the least glamorous claim in hair extensions and the one that most determines whether your install still looks good in six months.
What the term means
Every strand in the bundle came from one person’s head. Not a blend of several, not offcuts pooled by length. One donor, one bundle.
Why blending causes tangling
Hair is not smooth. The cuticle is a layer of overlapping scales, all pointing from root to tip. When every strand faces the same way, the scales lie against each other and slide. When strands from different heads are pooled — some inevitably reversed — the scales point into each other and catch.
That catching is tangling, and it is mechanical. No conditioner, oil or serum resolves opposing cuticles. It is worth understanding this properly, because it explains why hair that felt perfect for six weeks suddenly does not.
What consistency buys you beyond tangling
- Uniform lift response. One donor bleaches evenly. Blended hair lifts patchily because the strands did not start the same.
- Matched density. Wefts sit together without a visible seam.
- Predictable reorders. A top-up from the same batch blends with what the client already wears.
How to verify the claim
You cannot tell by looking at a new bundle — coated hair looks excellent in the packet. Judge the supplier instead. Three questions:
- Who sorted it? A manufacturer names the step. A reseller does not know.
- Can you match a reorder to my previous batch? Only possible if someone is holding allocation for you.
- What happens to bundles that fail inspection? If there is no answer, there is no inspection.
Where our hair sits
Our raw Indian lines are single donor, ethically sourced from South Indian temples, sorted by hand and inspected bundle by bundle in our own South India facility. Our Vietnamese line is not — it is 16A grade multiple donor processed hair with the cuticles manually aligned, and we say so on the product page rather than hoping you do not ask.
Questions we get asked
Does single donor hair last longer?
Yes, materially — because the main failure mode of extension hair is tangling caused by opposing cuticles, and single donor removes that cause.
Is single donor hair always raw?
No. Hair can come from one donor and still be chemically processed. Raw requires single donor plus no processing plus aligned cuticles.
How can I tell if hair is really single donor?
Not from the bundle. From the supplier — can they sort, weft and inspect in-house, and can they match a reorder to a previous batch?
